JOIN THE GROWING INDUSTRY These courses are designed for anyone with a passion for botanical science, design, landscaping and growing flowers and plants.

For the green fingered out there Newton Rigg College is the perfect place to start a career in horticulture. The College provides the opportunity to study a broad range of specialisms, including practical and theory-based work as well as on-the-job training for apprentices.

All our horticultural courses are part-time (one day per week for one to three years), allowing all students to learn while they earn.

We offer course at Newton Rigg's campus and also at the main headquarters for the Lake District National Parks at Brockhole Gardens and The Lakeland Horticultural Societies’ base at Holehird Gardens.

The College has a wonderful outdoor classroom in the form of our Educational Gardens. The gardens include a large range of themed shrub and herbaceous borders, an organic fruit and vegetable garden, annual meadows, an arboretum, a pleached hornbeam walkway, a woodland border, ornamental lawns and a variety of informal and formal ponds.

Within the College grounds there are also a range of heated and unheated growing and display glasshouses as well as polythene tunnels.

Our students are taught in our working potting sheds, glasshouses, in the design studio and in science laboratories.

The gardens are one of a very small handful of college gardens that annually open their gates as part of the National Garden Scheme, for details of our opening time and dates please see the NGS website.
