EMBRACING TRADITION AND THE FUTURE For those wishing to work within deer stalking, conservation and wildlife management.
Management of the countryside in a sustainable and integrated way has never been more important. Many of the valuable traditional skills remain, but future managers of habitats and wildlife will need the knowledge and skills of new technologies and the latest research for a more modern approach to a complex job. All countryside managers, including gamekeepers, estate managers and rangers will need to be even more aware of changing agricultural, forestry and habitat conservation practices than ever before. Our extensive resources, industry contacts and location within easy reach of the Lake District guarantee excellent field work opportunities.
The College's farms and estates cover over 1,000 hectares across four sites, providing excellent practical facilities for our Gamekeeping and Countryside students. Whether at our Newton Rigg or York Campuses all our students have full access to our extensive range of industry standard facilities, at Newton Rigg these include a bespoke gunroom, game larder, student gundog kennels as well as access to and practical experience of a driven partridge shoot, hatching and rearing programme, driven grouse moor and deer management forest.
By studying in this department you will learn the relevant skills to work in the following roles:
• Deer stalker
• Wildlife manager
• Warden or ranger
• Land or estate management
• Government and non-governmental organisations
Our lecturers have a vast knowledge of their subject areas and have strong connections to the industry, which is great for helping students find work experience during their studies and employment at the end of the course. We have strong links with the National Gamekeepers Organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation, the Deer Initiative and the Gamekeepers’ Welfare Trust. Experience of working with partners such as this and excellent liaison with key game management industrie, such as Marsdens Game Feeds and Bright Seeds, gives our students excellent employment opportunities.
