Newton Rigg College is committed to supporting all students in achieving their full potential, supporting students with learning difficulties and disabilities.
Newton Rigg College has a specialist Learning Support Department, this Team work closely with the specialist curriculum teams and students to provide support which is appropriate to a student's individual needs. It is advisable to speak to the Team as soon as possible, and preferably well in advance of starting your programme of study, so that arrangements can be put into place.
It is important to understand the value and importance of declaring your disability. It is advisable and beneficial to declare your disability when applying; however, you can let the College know at any stage of your course.
Learning Support for school leavers takes a banded approach with the specialist curriculum teaching teams receiving information, advice, guidance and training from the Learning Support Coordinators who specialise in areas such as Mental Health, Dyslexia and Autism. In most cases, students with a learning difficulty benefit from an embedded curriculum approach: a good or outstanding teaching and learning environment in which appropriate adjustments have been made to teaching materials, approaches, strategies and, where appropriate, to assessments. For some students, shared whole class support is an approach which is used to compliment the embedded curriculum approach. In addition, some students require a more intensive package with individual support provided for learning difficulties and disabilities. This banded approach enables students with learning difficulties and disabilities to achieve as well as their peers and to develop in confidence and independence. At Level 2 we offer out of classroom study skills support to help a student with learning difficulties to structure their assignments, rather than in classroom support, as this fosters greater independence and better prepares students for a Level 3 qualification and the transition to Higher Education.
Any student wishing to enquire about arranging support with their studies should contact our Learning Support Team by telephone on 01768 893623.
