Level 1 (Foundation Learning)
The Level 1 Foundation learning Tier provides a vocationally-based programme of study for learners progressing from entry level in colleges or from schools. The programme provides a variety of vocational pathways together with English and maths. Currently pathways include, Heath and Social Care, Agriculture, Animal Care and Hair and Beauty Therapy. Learners are based in our supportive learning environment which includes a social area. Staff are also based here to support learners throughout the teaching day. If you are interested in joining the courses staff can arrange for you to join current learners on a taster day. Please contact the college for more information on 01768 893400.
The course involves lectures, practical skills and site visits. The superb facilities at Newton Rigg enable students to put in to practice what they learn in the classroom.
Students will have a Course Manager and Academic Tutors to help them throughout the course, to help them achieve their goals and work through any issues students may have regarding their studies. If students have any specialist support needs please highlight this upon application and we can arrange for a meeting with the Learning Support Team.
Although there are no formal entry qualifications, it helps if applicants have studied at Entry Level 3 or achieved GCSEs at grades F or G. An enthusiasm for working in the chose area will help students to achieve on the course. For example in land-based studies applicants need to enjoy working outdoors with farm animals and in the gardens. For health and social care applicants need to enjoy working with people and be good at communication.
Upon successful completion of this course progression is available to other courses within the college where appropriate.
