Level 3 Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness)

Overview

This course of study allows you to specialise in activities related to coaching and fitness through one of three pathways, focussing on either Football, Rugby or Generic Sports. You will develop substantial knowledge of the body, health and safety and coaching and training in a range of popular sports. In year one learners may also achieve the 90 credit diploma.

Description

Students will work daily on their fitness and technical skills, gaining knowledge of key issues in sport. Units include anatomy and physiology, physiology of fitness, assessing risks in sport, fitness training and programming, sports coaching, sports development, fitness testing for sport and exercise, practical team sports and individual sports nutrition, exercise health and lifestyle, analysis of sports performance and organising sporting events. All the themes will link to your specific chosen pathway:

Football

Our football development centre offers students the opportunity to combine academic sporting qualifications with sporting excellence, coaching and competitive fixtures, while gaining a comprehensive overview of the sports industry. Newton Rigg College is proud to have a partnership with Workington Reds FC.

Rugby

Our rugby union development centre offers students the opportunity to combine academic sporting qualifications with sporting excellence, coaching and competitive fixtures, while gaining a comprehensive overview of the sports industry. Newton Rigg College is proud to have a partnership with Penrith Rugby Union Club with the potential opportunity for students to represent the Club in regional fixtures as well as gaining experience within a fully operational competitive rugby union club.

Generic Sports 

Students will gain knowledge and understanding of therapies relevant to a variety of team and individual sports.

Entry Requirements

Usually at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (new GCSE grading levels 4 to 9) to include any 2 from English, Maths and Science with at least a grade D in the remaining subject. Alternatively a suitable Level 2 vocational qualification (Merit or above) with English and Maths at Level 2
 

Further Study

Foundation Degree in a similar subject area or personal trainer qualifications.
