Level 2 Floristry

Overview

If you love flowers and plants and have an interest in creative design, this could be just the career for you. Experienced florists often go on to manage a retail outlet or start up their own business. Newton Rigg has fantastic practical facilities including a fully equipped design studio, potting sheds, a range of glasshouses and polythene tunnels. We also have education gardens which include an organic fruit and vegetable garden, herbaceous borders, tree and shrub borders, formal and informal ponds, a pleached hornbeam walkway, ornamental lawns, annual meadows, a hard landscaping resource area and woodland walk.

Description

This course can be studied one day a week for one year for the Certificate and two years for the Diploma. The course involves lectures, practical skills, site visits, personal research and project work. The course content offers a professional level of knowledge and understanding of the floristry industry. The superb facilities at Newton Rigg enable you to put in to practice what you learn in the classroom. In order to achieve the Certificate or the Diploma you may study the following units: introduction to art and design for florists Identify, check and monitor the quality of incoming cut materials Identify and maintain the condition of plants and planted designs, plan, prepare and construct tied floristry designs, plan, prepare and construct funeral design, plan, prepare and construct floral arrangements, plan, prepare and construct wedding designs with floral materials, display of floristry goods Introduction to working in the floristry industry and introduction to function decoration using floral displays.

Entry Requirements

Usually at least 4 GCSEs at grade E or above including Maths and English (new GCSE grading level 3). Alternatively a suitable Level 1 vocational qualification with English and Maths at Level 1.
 

Further Study

Upon successful completion of this course students may progress onto a Level 3 course in Floristry, this is available at our Askham Bryan College in York.
