Level 3 Animal Management

Overview

This pathway focuses on the care and understanding of a wide-range of animals in order to develop the skills to care for, handle and manage a variety of animals.

Description

This programme covers the subjects needed to develop the skills to work with a wide variety of animals. Course themes include how to care for, handle and manage a variety of animals, understanding animal health and how the animal body works. Students will also cover nutritional and accommodation requirements, behaviour and communication, exotic care and welfare, wildlife rehabilitation in addition to an investigative project.

There are lectures, talks from guest speakers, visits, practical sessions in the Animal Academy and work related experience. Students' work is assessed continually throughout the course. In year one learners may also achieve the 90 Credit Diploma.

Students studying at our Newcastle Centre will have the opportunity to use the Animal Management facilities at both Newton Rigg College and Askham Bryan College, York as well as working at offsite local facilities in partnership with the College.

Students visiting the York Campus will have the opportunity to visit our brand new Animal Management Facility and Wildlife Conservation Park. These facilities house a range of animals inlcuding reptiles, amphibians, mammals, birds, fish and invertebrates in state-of-the-art enclosures.

Entry Requirements

Usually at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (new GCSE grading levels 4 to 9) to include any 2 from English, Maths and Science with at least a grade D in the remaining subject. Alternatively a suitable Level 2 vocational qualification (Merit or above) with English and Maths at Level 2
 

Further Study

Upon successful completion of this course students may progress onto a Foundation Degree in Animal Management, a Degree in a related subject such as Behaviour, Welfare, Animal Conservation, or Animal Science, or directly into work within the animal industries.
