Residential Support Fund

The Residential Support Fund (RSF) is a means tested allowance designed to help students access education that is not available within reasonable daily travel of their home.

What is a reasonable daily travelling distance?

This is defined as:

A daily return journey which takes under 2 hours; or
A distance of under 15 miles from your home to the college.

Who can apply for assistance?

  • Students aged 16 or over on a full-time YPLA/SFA Learner responsive funded course of further education.
  • Home students i.e. you should have been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK and Islands for three years before your course began.
  • You course is not available locally (within reasonable daily travelling distance)
  • the course must involve at least 15 hours attendance at college per week and lasts for at least 10 weeks
  • you will be living in term-time lodgings that are no further than 15 miles from the campus
